Histrionic Personality Disorder

Histrionic personality disorder is a mental health diagnosis marked by a dramatic pattern of exaggerated emotionality and attention-seeking behavior.

Histrionic personality disorder (HPD) is among the most common personality disorders (PDs) and is associated with numerous problems both for people with the disorder and for those around them (Dawood et al., 2020). HPD is characterized by extreme emotionality and a desire for attention. In the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM; American Psychiatric Association [APA], 2022), there are eight diagnostic criteria for HPD, five of which are sufficient for diagnosis:

  1. 1. Discomfort in situations in which they are not the center of attention.
  2. 2. Interactions with others often characterized by inappropriate sexually seductive or provocative behavior.
  3. 3. Rapidly shifting and shallow expression of emotions.
  4. 4. Consistent use of physical appearance to draw attention to oneself. .
